Lots happening over this last stretch of days before we take a one-week break between semesters! Here’s what you need to know, and we hope you can join us for one or more of these events!
TOMORROW, FRIDAY APRIL 26, WE’RE ON THE ART WALK! We’re so grateful to Citizens’ Coop for including our artists and crafters from Art for All in this Froday’s Art Walk, taking place from 7-10pm at a variety of locations downtown (click here to see and print out a map). We’ll have a table at Citizens’ Coop, displaying and selling items made by our cadre of artsists and crafters who gather each Saturday at the Green House to make beautiful things from recycled materials. So if you have a chance to drop by the table and say hello and maybe purchase something, we would be so grateful!
DROP BY CITIZENS COOP AND HELP SUPPORT THE GREEN HOUSE: And speaking of Citizens Coop… Don’t forget to that all this month (five more days!), Citizens Coop is featuring us, The Green House, as the object of their “Be the Change” campaign. Set up at each register in the store is a glass jar and information about the Green House. Customers can drop their change into the glass jars and at the end of the month, the Coop will direct all the proceeds to us. They’ll be doing this every month, focusing on a different group, and we’re lucky enough to be the very first one! So drop by the Coop, pick up some great food, and drop your change in the jar! Come on Friday night at visit the Art Walk table and drop some change in the jars!
SATURDAY, APRIL 27, MONTHLY WORKDAY AT THE MICROFARM: If you have not visited Jade and Lynn’s microfarm, you don’t know what you’re missing! They have done incredible things at Black Acres Microfarm, and each month, we host a workday at the farm to help give back for all the produce they send our way each week for us to share with people who don’t get much good, healthy food. Come this Saturday and help out with basic farm chores, anytime between 9am and noon. BAM is located at 415 NW 32nd Street, near to the Publix Shopping Center on 34th Street and University Avenue.
MONDAY, APRIL 29, END OF THE SEMESTER PRAYER SERVICE AND POTLUCK: Each semester we are so lucky to have a group of people make a commitment to live and work at the Green House, and when it the semester ends, it is always hard to say good-bye. So at the end of each semester, we host a special prayer service and potluck dinner, to thank these young folks and send them off with our blessing to continue the work they’ve begin here wherever their journey may take them. So on Monday, April 29 at 6:30pm, we invite you to join us in saying good-bye and thank you to Vickie, Gloria and Clayton. Vickie has lived with us for two years now, and volunteered for several years prior to that.
Gloria and Clayton also volunteered for several years and spent the past year living at the house. We hope you’ll come, share stories and memories about them, and join us in blessing them as they move on from Gainesville into new and exciting endeavors. If you can bring a dish to share, that would be great! The prayer service will begin at 6:30pm with the potluck dinner to follow. And besides our live-in community members, we always like to give thanks to anyone who has spent time volunteering at the Green House during their time in Gainesville. So come by and let us know if you’ll be leaving after this semester or over the summer can we give you a proper thank you!
NEEDED: TUESDAY MORNING VOLUNTEERS! We’re short-handed on volunteers for Tuesday’s breakfast and could use 1-2 regulars, between 7-9am. (We could also use a second volunteer on any of the weekdays beginning with May and running through June!). Let us know if you’re interested and can help out.
ON BREAK FROM MAY 5-12: We’ll also be taking a short break, May 5-12, while UF and Santa Fe are on break between semesters. We’ll start back up with a summer schedule for May and June on Monday, May 13th. Check the website soon for more info on what will be happening during May and June.
Thanks for all your support!

First off, a quick thank you to everyone who helped out this weekend preparing for and then participating in the big Art for All Open House and Sale. We had a great turn-out, much pie was eaten, and many folks helped support the house by buying some of the items created this past semester at Art for All. We’ll continue to display items throughout the next two weeks, so if there is something you might like to purchase, stop by any weekday and you can look at what is left (someone is always on duty between 1-5pm, but you can stop by anytime). We’ll also be displaying at the Art Walk on Friday, April 26, so come by and see us then (more info in next week’s email). You can click here to see some of the items created at Art for All.
ROUNDTABLE THIS WEEK ON INTENTIONAL COMMUNITIES: This week, we’re really excited to have back with us Whitney Sanford, UF professor of religion, to talk about “Sustainability, Autonomy, and Resilience: Lessons from Intentional Communities.” The roundtable will be on Thursday at 6:30pm at the Green House. Here’s a short description: “Intentional communities such as Catholic Worker Houses and Farms, ecovillages, and Transition Towns, demonstrate alternatives, including voluntary simplicity, regional economies, and community responsibility. What can we learn from these communities, and how do these lessons translate beyond these communities?” Bring a dish to share if you can!
COMMUNITY PRAYER SERVICE ON SUNDAY: This Sunday, we’ll be hosting a community prayer service and potluck dinner at the Green House, from 4-7pm. A small group of folks have been meeting monthly to worship together, plan activities and share a meal. Everyone is welcome to join us. Bring a dish to share if you can!
DROP BY CITIZENS COOP AND HELP SUPPORT THE GREEN HOUSE: All this month, Citizens Coop is featuring us, The Green House, as the object of their “Be the Change” campaign. Set up at each register in the store is a glass jar and information about the Green House. ART FOR ALL OPEN HOUSE (WITH HOMEMADE PIES!) THIS SUNDAY, APRIL 14: Each semester, a group of artists and crafters from among our house community, former guests and community members, volunteers, and friends who live on the street meet every Saturday to encourage each other’s creativity. They make beautiful objects of art and wonderful and useful crafts from a whole host of found and recycled items–old calendars, t-shirts, bottles, magazines, and such. These items get “up-cycled” to make vases, gift bags, rugs, paper flowers, ornaments and more (click here to see some Art for All creations). And at the end of each semester, we host an Art for All Open House to share with the larger community these beautiful works of love. The Art for All Open House will be this coming weekend, on Sunday, April 14, from 1-4pm. Stop by to see the work of these artsists and crafters, enjoy a slice of homemade pie, and maybe pick up a Mother’s Day (or graduation) gift. Please invite friends and others!

Thanks! (You can see more about it here, http://www.citizensco-op.com/community/be-the-change, although the site is down right now for some reason.)
A WINDOW INTO THE WORLD OF THE GREEN HOUSE: Kelli wrote a really beautiful piece that I think captures a slice of our life at the Green House. The post is on her blog, What We Need Is Here, and it is entitled “Mercy.” You can find it by clicking here. Check it out when you have the time.
INTERESTED IN LIVING AT THE GAINESVILLE CATHOLIC WORKER FOR A SEMESTER? Each semester, we accept 3-6 students, recent grads, and other aduts who are interested in exploring life and work in a gospel-based community, standing with and working alongside people whom our society marginalizes, and deepening one’s sense of the intersection between spirituality and social justice. The GCW Semester gives individuals the opportunity to experiment with and practice a life of simplicity, solidarity, service, community, spirituality and more. It is a “total immersion” engagement in the life and work of the GCW. If you or someone you know might be interested in living and working with us for the Fall 2013 semester, we’d love to share information and talk. Email us and we’ll send some information to look through and set up a time to meet.
Hope you’ll stop by this weekend, Sunday from 1-4pm, and share a piece of pie with us!
HOUSE NEWS: Busy, busy busy! Join us this week for Art for All Sale, End of Semester dinner, etc.!

ART FOR ALL OPEN HOUSE AND SALE ON SATURDAY: GCW members, volunteers, guests and friends from the street, under the direction of local artists and crafters, have created a variety of beautiful and unique artwork and crafts this spring. Part art therapy, part cottage industry, part celebration of creativity and community–the process and results have been enjoyed by everyone involved. The creations are eclectic and employ skill, attention and creativity to transform used, everyday items into something beautiful and useful. All proceeds go to support the Gainesville Catholic Worker and participating artists. These items make great gifts for graduation and Mother’s Day while supporting the dignity and creativity of the artists and crafters. The sale will take place on Saturday, April 28, 1 -5pm, at the Green House of the Gainesville Catholic Worker, 218 NW 2nd Avenue. You can also view some of the items for sale on the GCW website by clicking here. Come visit the house and gardens, enjoy a piece of homemade pie, and see if there is anything you might like for yourself or someone special. Please help us advertise the sale by spreading the word, inviting your family and friends to come, forwarding this email, posting on Facebook, etc. If you want to help at the sale and open house, let us know!
END OF THE SEMESTER PRAYER SERVICE AND POTLUCK DINNER: Join us on Thursday evening, from 6:30-8pm, as we wrap up another semester with our end of the semester prayer service and potuck dinner. We’ll be thanking Tamra for her service here at the house as she graduates and moves on to medical school, as well as recognizing other volunteers and friends who will be leaving Gainesville after this semester. If you’re graduating or moving on, please come by and join us on Thursday night so we can say thank you and good bye! Bring a dish to share if you can! Everyone is welcome to join us.
GET YOUR PORTRAIT TAKEN AT THE GCW THIS WEEK! Tamra’s boyfriend, Ben, a professional photographer, will be with us during the cafe on Wednesday to take portrait photos of our friends, volunteers, guests, and anyone else who wants to show up. We’ll be displaying some of the portraits at the house next year and everyone who gets their photo taken gets a free copy to keep or pass along to a loved one. Come anytime between 11am and 3pm, enjoy some lunch and have your picture taken.
MMMMMMM, PIE… In preparation for Saturday’s Art for All Open House and Sale, we’ll be making homemade pies in the afternoon on Thursday and Friday to share with patrons, shoppers and friends at the sale. Come help us bake and prep for the sale. Email Kelli at gvillecw@yahoo.com for exact times if you want to come and help.
HOLY CANNOLI BATMAN, THEY’VE PUBLISHED A NEWSLETTER! Yes indeed we have. The new copy of Conspire, the GCW Newsletter, is now available at the house and online. You can click here to read the Spring 2012 edition online. We’ll be sending out hard copies to everyone on our mailing list later this week (let us know if you want to be added). This issue includes info on the Art for All sale, former GCW Kim Hunter’s speech given when she was awarded the Jack Penrod Award for Peace and Justice, a reflection on addiction by Kelli, and the House Letter. Hope you enjoy!
We were really excited last week to have David Keaton, the first death row inmate exonerated in Florida, stay with us at the house. David and his cousin Alphonso were in town to speak on the death penalty at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Here’s a photo of the two of them at the house:
Lastly, even as the semester winds down, we hope some of you who are sticking around can help out in May and early June. We’ll keep several of our projects going through the middle of June and can use help with things like the cafe, Breakfast Brigade, etc. Thanks!

HOUSE NEWS: Some special needs and Art for All sale stretch
Click here to see an entire list of what is happening this week at the Gainesville Catholic Worker.
ART FOR ALL STRETCH RUN: Later this month, we’ll hold the second of our biannual Art for All sales. These sales feature the work of some of our friends from the street as well as numerous friends, volunteers, local artists and crafters, etc. The money raised from the sale benefits the GCW and those artists who are homeless, unemployed, or otherwise struggling to make ends meet. For the next few weeks, if you’d like to help us recycle, up-cycle or create items for the sale, we would love to have you join us at the Green House Knitters gathering on Monday nights (7:30-9:30pm), at Art for All on Tuesday afternoons (1-3pm), during the Cafe on Wednesday (12:30-2:30pm) or on any one of several Saturday project days to be announced later. We’ll have donated materials ready for you to use and instruction for those wanting to help create. AND… if your church or school or community group wants to help us sell the arts and crafts after a service, at a meeting, etc., we’d love to make arrangements to come and help facilitate this. Just contact us at gvillecw@yahoo.com and we’ll work out the date and details.
SPECIAL NEEDS FOR SOME GCW FRIENDS: Occasionally, we get some requests from some of our regular guests and friends who stop by the house. Sometimes it is help in replacing a lost or stolen item, sometimes it’s an urgent need for someone who has just gotten a job, sometimes it’s a request associated with a birthday, and so on. In the past few weeks, we’ve had several requests from friends who could use bicycles. Two gentlemen in particular need bikes to help them get to work sites as well as get around town. One had his bike stolen a month or so ago; the other’s old bike just finally fell apart. If you have an old bike you’re not using and would like to donate it for us to pass on to one of these guys or others for whom a bike opens up greater work opportunities and easier access to services, let us know. (Bike locks are also always helpful!)
We also have a long-time friend of the house who is in need of a used working laptop. He lives in his car and had his computer stolen out of the car a few weeks ago when someone broke a window to get in. Our friend was quick to point out that it is NOT a necessity for him, but that it was helpful for researching job opportunities, connecting with his family, and enjoyment. If anyone has an old laptop they were thinking of donating somewhere, we could cut out the middleman for you and get it to this person directly.
Lastly, we had a fellow request a pair of size 13 sneakers at the cafe last week. We get in shoes every once in awhile, but I told him size 13′s didn’t often come in. I told him I’d ask around in case one large-footed person wanted to do another one a solid.
HOUSE NEWS: End of the Semester Prayer Service and 2nd chance to get Art for All items!
Click here to see an entire list of what is happening this week at the Gainesville Catholic Worker.
So many, many thanks to all of you who dropped by, helped out, and bought things at the Art for All sale this past weekend to support the Gainesville Catholic Worker and our cadre of artists! You can click here to see photos our own Tamra Rich took and posted to her Facebook page (scroll to the bottom to see the photos from the sale). If you didn’t get to visit the sale, but would still like to check out some of our items and do a little holiday shopping, we’ll be out at two places this weekend selling more (see below for more info).
Special thanks too to Diedre Houchen who presented last week’s Roundtable. Diedre’s presentations are always worth seeing and taking part in, and this one as usual engendered good discussion and left an impression. Thanks Diedre! On to what is happening this week…
SECOND CHANCE FOR ART FOR ALL ITEMS: We’ve been invited to bring Art for All items to sell at two different events this weekend, so if you didn’t get a chance to come by last weekend, here’s another chance. On Saturday, from 3-7pm, we’ll have a table at the Winter Art Fair downtown at the Sun Center (the area around the Hippodrome). Kelli and I visited the fair last year and enjoyed the many eclectic offerings. We hope you’ll visit our table and see the other vendors too. On Sunday, from 7:30-10pm at Holy Faith Catholic Church (747 NW 43rd Ave), we’ll have a table during their Christmas concert. The music at the concert is incredible and entry is free. Stop by and see us if you go or if you’re in the area and want to pick up something to support the GCW and our group of artists. Click here to see a sampling of items from Art for All.
NEED TO BORROW A CAMP LANTERN OR BATTERY-POWERED LIGHT: Speaking of the Winter Art Fair, we need some camp lanterns or battery-powered lights to help light our table at the fair. If you have any and can let us borrow them for the weekend, we would be very appreciative. Just email us at gvillecw@yahoo.com and let us know. Thanks!
GCW MEMBER FEATURED ON BLOG: Vickie Machado, a GCW live-in community member and MA student on religion at UF, was recently featured on the Eco-stewards blog, which highlights the intersection between religion and the environment. You can read her piece, “Some Thoughts on Mindful Living,” by clicking here. The piece grew out of a Roundtable she gave earlier this semester at the house. Congrats Vickie!
END OF THE SEMESTER PRAYER SERVICE AND POTLUCK: We’re grateful for everyone who has contributed to making the GCW work this semester, and we’re holding an “end of the semester” prayer service and potluck dinner to say thank you. The prayer service will begin at 6pm, with the potluck dinner to follow. We especially want to encourage you to attend if you are graduating or moving out of the Gainesville after the semester. We’d like to say a personal thank you to all of those who have helped and especially those who will be moving on to new things in their life. We’ll also be saying a special thanks and giving a special blessing to Daniel Loya who has spent the past semester living with us at the GCW and serving as a member of the live-in community. Come hear and share stories about Daniel! Bring a dish to share if you can!
That’s all for now folks. This is the penultimate week of the Fall 2011 semester at the GCW, so come and help out while we’re still open. We’ll be taking a break during the holidays starting December 19.
HOUSE NEWS: Our thanks, Art for All sale, First Thursday Roundtable – this week!
To see a complete list of what is happening this week, click here.
Belated Thanksgiving wishes to all of you from all of us at the GCW! The great orator, William Jennings Bryan, once said: “On Thanksgiving Day, we acknowledge our dependence.” Everything we do at the GCW, we know how dependent we are on you–our volunteers, our guests and friends, our contributors. For all that you do to hold us up and encourage our work, we give thanks. We cannot do it alone; we have created a place of welcome, compassion and care, by working together. So in this post-Thanksgiving time, we say thank you–thank you for your prayers and your support, for all the notes of encouragement; for your steadfast presence at the house and in our lives; for the manner in which each of you embody compassion every day in your relationships, at work, in your families, in your places of worship, and elsewhere; for your financial support of the GCW, the donations and contributions you make, not only from your surplus but often at personal sacrifice; and finally thank you for being part of the GCW family.
FIRST THURSDAY ROUNDTABLE AND POTLUCK DINNER FOCUSES ON EDUCATION: We’re excited to have Roundtable favorite Diedre Houchen with us to lead this month’s Roundtable. The topic for this month’s Roundtable is, “Limiting or Lifting: Educating our children for the world we want or the one we have?” We’ll have a broad discussion about the purpose of schooling, how that purpose is actualized in public education and current trends in educational policy. We’ll ask the question, what is the heart of education and how do we make sure we guard that vision for America’s children? Diedre is a doctoral student in education at UF, former coordinator for the youth-oriented Food and Farm Preservation Project at Florida Organic Growers, and author of the article “Uneasy Justice: Apartheid, Truth and Reconciliation in South Africa.” If you can bring a dish to share, great! Roundtable is on Thursday, from 6:30-8pm.
ART FOR ALL SALE: Join us for our second “annual” holiday sale and open house! GCW members, volunteers, guests and friends from the street, under the direction of local artists and crafters, have created a variety of beautiful and unique artwork and crafts this fall. These items make great holiday gifts while supporting the dignity and creativity of the artists and crafters. The sale will take place on Saturday, December 3 and Sunday, December 4, from 1-5pm both days at the Green House of the Gainesville Catholic Worker, 218 NW 2nd Avenue. Please help us advertise the sale by spreading the word, inviting your family and friends to come, forwarding this email, posting on Facebook, etc. If you want to help at the sale and open house, let us know! We especially need help with donations of light, Christmas-style finger foods for the sale/open house. Let Kelli know if you can help out by emailing her at gvillecw@yahoo.com.
BREAKFAST BRIGADE HELP: We don’t have anyone signed up to help this week at the Breakfast Brigade on Friday, 4:15-7am. Let us know if you can make it and help out!

HOUSE NEWS: Cafe starts, Crane Project report, and schedule ramps up!
To see what is happening this week, click here.
We had a very nice start to the semester with over 20 of us gathering on Thursday night for the start of the semester prayer service, welcoming of our new live-in community members, and a delicious potluck meal! Thanks to all who were able to attend.
PEACE CRANE PROJECT: We also wanted to share with you a report about the guerrilla art project we did in August, with over 50 people chipping in to make it happen. From August 6-9, we hung origami peace cranes at various locations around downtown, with the message attached to each crane: “This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the world.” For a full report on the project, some photos showing where the 1,000 cranes were hung, and links to news stories by the Gainesville Sun, TV20 and other media, click here.
This week, we’re ramping up the schedule, adding in some tried-and-true projects from the past and starting some new ones as well. Here’s what’s going on:
JUSTFAITH AT THE GCW: If you’ve always wanted to explore more deeply how integrated our faith is with working for justice in the world, this might be the program you have been looking for! Catholic Charities sponsors the JustFaith program in Gainesville and we’re thrilled to be hosting it this year at the GCW. It is an intensive formation program, meeting 30 times over the course of 8-9 months (between September and May), but everyone we know who has participated has found it to be an extraordinary and transformative experience. If you think you might be interested and want to learn more, we’re having 2 informational sessions: this week on Tuesday, August 30 from 7-7:45pm at the house; and again next Tuesday, Sept. 6 same time at the house. The program will start in mid-September! Contact Johnny at gvillecw@yahoo.com if you want to learn more or come to one of the information sessions!
DOROTHY’S FARMERS MARKET CAFE: The cafe starts back up this week, Wednesday, August 31! We’re in need of volunteers! Come help out with prep between 9:30-11:45am, serving from 12-3pm, or clean up from 2:30-4pm. And if you’re interested in learning how to be one of the cafe chefs, let Kelli know. Each semester Kelli works with 2-3 cafe chefs-in-training, helping train folks in preparing and cooking local, seasonal foods for our guests at the cafe. Let us know if you can volunteer this week or if you’re interested in becoming one of our chefs-in-training! Email us at gvillecw@yahoo.com.
ROUNDTABLE ON THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11: Our topic for our first Thursday Roundtable will be the tenth anniversary of 9/11 and an exploration of what has happened in our nation and around the world in the wake of the events of that day. We’ll share a resource from Colleen Kelly, a member of September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, who lost her brother Bill on 9/11. Johnny will lead us in a discussion about how our nation responded, what could we have done differently, and where do we go from here. Bring a dish to share for the potluck meal if you can! NOTE: We’re only doing Roundtables once-a-month this semester, on the first Thursday of each month. The time has shifted a little too: we’ll be beginning at 6:30 and ending at 8pm.
ART FOR ALL HELP: The Art for All Project will be starting up again in September, and we need your help. Last year’s project was a great success, bringing together a diverse group of professional and amateur artists from all ages and backgrounds to produce some beautiful work, a lot of which was sold at end-of-the-semester Art Sales to benefit both the artists and the work of the House. To find out more about the project, our plans for this semester and how you can help, click here.
BREAKFAST BRIGADE VOLUNTEERS: Brigade got started last week with only live-in house members doing it. It would be great to have 2-4 extra volunteers each Friday if possible. If you’re interested, email us at gvillecw@yahoo.com and let us know. We can add you to the schedule for this week or reserve you a spot on any Brigade you want to do throughout the semester!
NEW BROCHURE AVAILABLE: We’ve also just printed our new brochure for the semester, which includes info on all our projects and the weekly schedule for this semester. If you want to look at it or download it as a PDF, just click here: GCW Brochure – Fall 2011
Hope you can join us this week!
